About us

Our story is one of solidarity.

We came together because we understood something no one outside could: that living with HIV in The Gambia means facing not just a virus, but silence, fear, and stigma. So we built the support we wished we had.

Who we are

A society founded by people living with HIV

Nganiyakilling Support Society is a community-based organisation in The Gambia, created and led by people living with HIV/AIDS. We are not a clinic and not a government office — we are neighbours, friends, and peers who have walked this road and choose to walk it together.

Every programme we run is shaped by lived experience. When a new member arrives frightened and alone, they are met by someone who has felt exactly that fear — and come through it.

Vision

Where we are going

A Gambia where no one living with HIV is defined by stigma — where every person can access care, protect their mental health, and belong.

Our model

Peer-led, and proud of it

Research and experience agree: people living with HIV are more likely to stay in care and stay well when they are supported by others who share their experience. That is the heart of how we work.

Our small team of coordinators receives only modest transport support to cover their travel. The work itself is powered by volunteers and members giving back. This keeps us lean, trusted, and accountable to the community we serve.

National context

Part of a wider response

The Gambia has coordinated its HIV response through the National AIDS Secretariat since 2001, with people living with HIV recognised as essential partners. We complement that national effort at the community level — reaching people where clinical services alone cannot.

A note on confidentiality. Membership of our society is private. We never share names, photos, or health information without explicit consent. Your story is yours to tell.
